If the battle for America’s soul is ongoing, then surely its heart—and its backbone—lie with the majority of its population: unsung individuals of resilience in a racially and economically diverse country of vast extremes. In this revelatory event, four of the country’s most penetrating writers discuss what America is—and what it could be. Elaine Castillo’s debut novel, America Is Not the Heart, propels readers into immigrant life in the face of the American dream. Amitava Kumar passionately depicts the experience of being an outsider in New York in his new novel, Immigrant, Montana. National Book Award–winner Rachel Kushner probes institutional sexism in The Mars Room. Tommy Orange’s debut novel, There There, revolutionizes Native American literature. For many, the fate of this superpower is a ubiquitous household conversation. Hear it as you never have before.
