The Vancouver Writers Fest presents
CHERIE DIMALINE, SUSIN NIELSEN, KENNETH OPPEL
Moderator: Anna Ling Kaye
The worlds depicted in fiction for children are often rich and deeply imaginative, suspending traditional rules of politics, environment… and even physics. In these worlds, despite their hardships, young protagonists grow during their quests for adventure and justice. Three of the most recognizable names in Canadian children’s fiction—Cherie Dimaline (The Marrow Thieves), Susin Nielsen (No Fixed Address) and Kenneth Oppel (Inkling)—share how they write these worlds. Each author will read briefly from their latest work before discussing the tools they use to create sustainable places for beloved storytelling, from present-day Canada to dystopian futures. Cherie Dimaline also envisioned this event, and three others, as the Festival’s inaugural Guest Curator.
Suitable for grades 5-7.
