Vancouver Writers Fest

24. The Journey of Reconciliation

The Vancouver Writers Fest presents

Facing our past and its deep-rooted impacts on Indigenous survivors and descendants is an essential task for all Canadians. What does reconciliation mean to each of us? How do we achieve it? Monique Gray Smith is a mixed-heritage writer of Cree, Lakota and Scottish ancestry. The award-winning writer and international speaker invites children to consider these questions in Speaking Our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation. With accessible, welcoming language she focuses on the impact of residential schools and helps students understand what each of us can do to support healing. This is a warm, and essential, primer on Canada’s Indigenous history—and what comes next.

Suitable for grades 4-7.
