63. Told With Humour

The Vancouver Writers Fest presents

Moderator: Morgan Brayton

“Laughter is not our medicine. Stories hold our cure. Laughter is just the honey that sweetens the bitter medicine,” explains zeitgeist comedian, Hannah Gadsby. These popular authors use laughter to face—and understand—the bitter moments of life. Randy Boyagoda and Maureen Medved use humour to poke fun at institutions: the religious, the academic and the family. Boyagoda’s Original Prin follows an academic trying to become a better man as he copes with a cancer diagnosis. Medved considers whether life truly begins or ends with tenure in her acerbic Black Star. Rawi Hage’s focus is more acute: the 1970s Lebanese Civil War. A transcendent combination of tragedy and comedy, Beirut Hellfire Society is a beautiful meditation on living through war. Share in a spoonful of sugar.
