77. Passage of Time

The Vancouver Writers Fest presents

Hal Wake

Caring for aging parents is an almost-inescapable rite and a labour of love. Despite its inevitability, rarely do we feel ready to see our life’s giants weakened by time. It takes a resilient heart and penetrating mind to delve into the intricacies involved. Both Giller-nominated Bill Gaston and Giller-winning Elizabeth Hay do just this in their intimate portraits of family life, as shared with moderator Hal Wake. Just Let Me Look at You is an achingly truthful ode to a father-son relationship marred by drinking and to Gaston’s later realization of his father’s complexity. All Things Consoled offers a portrait of Hay’s life from difficult child to understanding caretaker. It takes grace and empathy to write about aging loved ones. Authors like Gaston and Hay do so with beauty and insight.
